Hi! Welcome to Scratches on the Notepad – a blog dedicated to making the lives of first year university students easier.

When SotN founder Wendy started her first year of university, she felt lost. She wasn’t mentally prepared for university, the exams were tough, and professors were so brilliant (or so nonsensical) that lectures weren’t making much sense. Some of the other students adjusted well while others had the same half-dazed look she did. Searching around for resources, she found books, articles, and blogs dedicated to providing advice to university students. However, not all were useful for helping her make that leap between high school and university. Talking to other students, she realized that the biggest challenge transitioning to university was the sheer overwhelmingness of the entire university experience. Problems such as fast-paced lectures, difficult exams, getting used to large campuses, and living away from home really added up.

As Henry Royce said, “if it doesn’t exist, create it”. Hence SotN was born.

This blog aims to take that pile of confusion otherwise known as first year univeristy and chop it down to manageable chunks. Look around the blog and tell us if we have succeeded (even a little) in doing that!
